Adult Yoga Classes These classes are suitable are for all adults over 18 years of age with any level of experience from beginner to advanced. Yoga is beneficial for everyone, and so my classes are accessible to all. Children 12-18 years are also welcome to come along with their parent or guardian.
Yoga is a magical practice that transforms lives. Through the practice of yoga we learn to be at ease within our bodies and our minds. We learn more of ourselves and our connection to all things.
Each of my yoga classes introduces students to an aspect of yoga philosophy. This philosophy is beautifully woven through the whole class providing the opportunity to explore and understand it’s relevance to life in the 21st century .
Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga
Yoga is a practice that dates back more than 5000 years. It is a science, that searches for the best ways to lead a happy and balanced life, and to feel a greater connection with others, with the universe, and greater consciousness. Patanjali’s eight limbs of yoga draw together these teachings to practically explain the path of yoga through 8 limbs:
yamas and niyamas teach us how to live well
asana are the physical poses designed to strengthen the body
pranayama is our life force, commonly linked to breath
pratyahara is the inward withdrawal of our senses
dharana, dhyana, and samadhi, the final three limbs are concentration, meditation and enlightenment
Yoga is learnt by experience and practice. By feeling sensations, noticing thoughts, the breath and sensing into the soul. My classes integrate all eight limbs
Without this integration, yoga becomes merely a physical exercise and we lose so many of the benefits and wider teachings of yoga.
Practice of the Asanas
And of course, we do spend a good part of our class on the practice of Asanas. Asanas build strength, improve flexibility, mobilise our joints, improve balance and our awareness of our phyical body.
I tailor postures to allow for all abilities, for beginners and advanced yogis alike and modify poses for injuries or other physical restrictions my students may have.
Yoga isn’t all about difficult and challenging poses. Each and every pose should be practised mindfully, supported with the breath, and learning from the experience. The challenge in every pose is what we learn from it, whether that is headstand or sitting cross legged.
Pranayama
Pranayama translates as control of the life force or expanding the dimensions of the lifeforce and is practised through our focus on the breath in each class. It is also known as breathwork.
Conscious breathing strengthens and oxygenates the body, the heart and the lungs
Pranayama teaches us focus and concentration required for meditation and through pranayama we learn how to access the parasympathetic nervous system, the place of relaxation and calm within all of us:
a place of rest, calmness and tranquillity.
Meditation and Relaxation
The goal of yoga is to prepare our bodies for meditation and relaxation, to find the quiet and peaceful place within us, and to connect with the universal energy that we are all a part of. And so each class ends with a beautiful meditation and guided relaxation.
